This solar refrigerator, invented by Emily Cummins, is a brilliantly simple solution for keeping food cool in a hot, dry environment. It's basically a metal cylinder surrounded by wet material, surrounded by a mesh sleeve to hold it all together.

Between the outer cylinder and the inner cylinder is an open compartment where any medium capable of holding water can be placed. The medium would usually be sand, wool or soil and is packed into the gap and then water is added.

When the fridge is placed in a warm environment, the sun’s energy causes the water to evaporate from the medium. As the water/medium mix is held against the inner cylinder, heat is removed in the form of energy. Due to heat transfer the inner cylinder becomes cooler. The reduced temperature and completely dry environment of the inner chamber makes it perfect for the storage of perishables as it will allow items to be kept fresh for longer.

You can use things like hessian as well. The concept has been around for a while. Widely used in Australia. We used to have water bags in thick hessian that were tied to the kangaroo (roo) bar on the front of the car. The evaporation cools the water as you drive. Sure most dry state people have seen these.

In fact it would be interesting to see if speeding up the air flow would have a measurable inpact on temps. Of course rate of evaporation would increase, increasing water use.

It is also interesting in that it is exactly the same principle as the modern refridgerator, only non mechanincal and not as temperature controlled.

I'd be interested to see if I could live with one of these. I might have a go.

Prof. Steven Jones[the 911 truther]built an interesting refrigerator useing an old solid aluminum satellite dish he put a metal container at the focus point and pointed it at an empty spot in the night sky. Claimed to be able to freeze ice cubes in 45 degree temperatures. He has also built some great solar ovens.

He had to do that in a very low humidity. It is well known that a desert cools rapidly after the sun goes down. That is because of the low humidity. Humidity reflects radiant heat, so if there isn't any humidity the heat just keeps going.

Humidity retains specific heat, it doesn't "reflect" anything.

If humidity condenses it radiats latent heat.

OK, I'm going to need a little more explanation here.

This one looks pretty cool. Guy who built it posted it on another forum and said it would keep stuff at about 55F in 100F+ weather.
